What does a cardiology consultation include?
- Medical history – a conversation about symptoms, illnesses, therapy, family history and lifestyle
- Physical examination – measurement of blood pressure and pulse, auscultation of the heart and lungs, examination of the abdomen, peripheral arteries and veins.
- ECG – basic analysis of the electrical activity of the heart
- Echocardiography (heart ultrasound) – assessment of the structure and function of the heart muscle, valves, great vessels and other cardiac structures as needed.
- Additional tests – stress test, Holter ECG or blood pressure monitor, lab tests (as indicated)
- Risk assessment – stratification of cardiovascular risk
- Therapy recommendations – introduction or adjustment of therapy, follow-up plan and referral to further tests if needed
What is echocardiography / heart ultrasound?
A non-invasive method that uses ultrasound waves to image the structure and function of the heart, valves and blood flow. It is completely painless and harmless, with no radiation.
What is the difference between 2D and 3D/4D heart ultrasound?
2D produces a two-dimensional image of the heart, while 3D/4D shows the three-dimensional structure in real time with more detailed anatomical relations, enabling more precise diagnostics.
Why is a stress test performed?
To assess cardiac function under physical exertion, to detect coronary artery disease and rhythm disorders, and to evaluate physical capacity. The most common indication for a stress test is chest pain or angina pectoris.
Why is dobutamine stress echocardiography performed?
The drug dobutamine is used to accelerate heart activity, mimicking physical exertion in patients unable to exercise. Using ultrasound with a dedicated programme and protocol, the test assesses signs of ischaemia, i.e. coronary artery blockage.

Which basic laboratory tests are recommended before an internal medicine / cardiology consultation?
ESR, CBC, urea, creatinine, Na, K, AST, ALT, blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL, urate, urinalysis. These tests can be performed at Dr. Mačkić Practice.
What does a pre-operative internal medicine examination include?
Assessment of general health status, cardiac and pulmonary function, laboratory results, ECG, and where necessary heart ultrasound and other tests to evaluate surgical risk.

Internal medicine consultation, lab tests (blood, urine), ECG, ultrasound of the heart, abdomen and thyroid, and where indicated a stress test or other specific investigations.
How to prepare for a cardiology or internal medicine consultation?
Proper preparation ensures more precise diagnostics and a more efficient consultation. We recommend:
- Bring previous records – test results, discharge letters, imaging and a list of medications you take
- For lab tests – come fasting (8–12 hours without food)
- For abdominal ultrasound – come fasting, no smoking or chewing
- For the stress test – comfortable clothing and sports shoes, avoid caffeine
- Take your medications – unless your doctor has instructed otherwise
